How to choose a climbing wall for kids

A climbing wall turns a spare wall into somewhere children can move every day. Climbing uses the whole body and helps develop strength, balance and coordination. Here is how to pick the right set for your space.

1. Start with the space

Measure the wall you have in mind. Our wall panels have wavy edges that connect together, so you can start with a single panel and add more later. A single panel set measures about 49 x 72 cm. The XL set uses four panels to make a wall of 143 x 96 cm. Check the dimensions on each product page before you order.

2. Check what is in the set

Some sets include climbing holds and all the fixings, others are panels only and the holds are sold separately. The XL set includes 4 panels, 16 holds, 16 bolts, 48 T-nuts, 144 wood screws, 16 screws, 16 wall plugs and an Allen key. Each listing spells out exactly what comes in the box. Extra panels and holds can be added at any time, and the holds can be moved around to make new routes.

3. Think about age

The maker lists the climbing wall panels for children from about age 3, and its toddler climbing frames and climbing triangles for ages 1 to 3. For younger children a low climbing triangle or arch is a gentler start, and a climbing wall suits older children who like to climb higher. Always follow the age guidance in the maker's instructions.

4. Fix it safely

Install the wall exactly as described in the maker's instructions, on a wall that can carry the load. The XL climbing wall is rated for up to 120 kg once it has been installed properly. Check the fixings from time to time, keep the area underneath clear, consider a soft mat below, and always supervise children while they climb. The climbing wall is for indoor use, so keep it dry and clean.

5. Add more play

Many families combine a wall with wall bars, a climbing triangle or a swing so children can change activity. You can browse everything in one place:
